Echocardiography
An echocardiogram
(also called "echo") is a non-invasive, painless study that is used to evaluate
the structure and function of the heart. Ultrasound jelly is applied and
an ultrasound probe like those used for prenatal ultrasounds is placed on the
chest and abdomen to take pictures of the heart.
In our lab with dedicatd pediatric sonographers, the
environment is calm and soothing. Children can lie back and watch movies
during the study. For some children who are especially anxious or unable
to remain still for the test, we offer sedation in order to obtain optimal
pictures.
A typical echocardiogram takes about 20-30
minutes. The physician will review the images and discuss the results
immediately following the study.
