Practice update on Avandia Study
05/22/2007

The recent publication on Avandia is not a new study.  This analysis combines several studies that were not specifically looking for heart disease.  This type of study is subject to error, which the authors readily admit.  Two large long term studies do not show an increase risk of heart attack.  The FDA, GlaxoSmithKline and researchers will be reviewing this data.  Although the 43 percent higher risk may appear to be impressive, the actual number of patients was small.  We do not recommend abruptly stopping Avandia at this time, rather, this should be discussed with your diabetes doctor at your routine follow up visit.
