Frequently Asked Questions
Following is a list of our most frequently asked questions and the answers.
The Rankin Women's Center is in the Presbyterian Medical Tower. How do I find your suite?
First, park in our parking deck. The entry is off Caswell Street. From any level, take the elevator to the 3rd floor. Exit right from the elevator, cross the cross walk into the tower, and our office is the first office on the left, Suite #307. Is there handicap access?
Is there handicap access?
The building is handicap accessible. Special parking spaces are available in the parking deck and are clearly marked.
Why do I always have to give the receptionist my insurance card?
The office needs all the information found on your card to file your claim properly. If we send specimens or blood outside our office, we must send a copy of your card with the order for the test. Also, at times your insurance company doesn't change, but the group numbers will, so we always need to copy your current card at every visit.
If I pay my co-pay when I check in, do I have to stop by the cashier's desk when I finish with my appointment?
Yes, please see the cashier before leaving. In order to bill your insurance we need to know the diagnosis your physician wrote on the form. If the physician has other instructions, such as a referral or return appointments, that will also be written on the form. We also need to validate your parking ticket so you will not be charged for parking in the parking deck.
What do I do when I have a question for the doctor?
During office hours call 704-384-1620. The receptionist will ask for your name, date of birth, social security number, your physician, your phone number and your pharmacy number, if you feel a prescription may be called in. Briefly inform the receptionist the reason for your call. Your message along with your medical record will be given promptly to the triage nurse. Non-emergency calls made prior to 4 pm will be returned the same day. Calls that require prompt attention will have priority. Emergency calls will be directed immediately to the nurse.
What if I have a question or an urgent problem after office hours?
Our after hours answering service is focused on dealing with urgent health problems. To connect with the service, call our regular office number 704-384-1620 with your urgent medical question. However, for non-urgent problems, refills, appointments, billing questions, etc., please call the office during business hours for those types of questions. The after hour triage nurses will not be able to assist with these routine types of issues.
What if I have an emergency?
Any time your life is in danger, call 911.
Can I have a prescription called in without an office visit?
That would depend on many factors, such as: what the medication is, what it is for, whether you had been treated with the medication successfully in the past, or how long it has been since your last visit?
Should I call for my lab results
If you have not been informed of your lab results, please call after 4 weeks. This will allow time for the lab results to come back and for the physician to review. It will also allow time for you to receive any letters that already have been sent by your physician or the nurse.
Will routine labs be done during my annual physical?
Unless you are having a problem, routine labs will not be performed. Many insurance companies will only pay for routine labs your primary care physician orders, so we do not want you to be responsible for a bill your insurance will not cover.
What if I don't want certain tests billed to my insurance company(for example: aids testing or other std tests)?
At your request, we can prevent any claim from filing to your insurance. However, since your insurance company will not be responsible, you will be asked to pay at the time for service for any test we do not bill. You need only inform the cashier of your specific requests when you check out.
Sometimes when I have a culture or Pap smear done, I have additional charges that are billed at a later date
This happens when the specimen sent to the lab indicates the need for additional work-up. One instance is when a urine culture is performed and pathogenic bacteria are found. The lab may do further testing to identify the species of bacteria and the sensitivities to various medications. The other instance is when the pathologist detects the possibility of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)on a pap smear. By testing the same pap specimen, the patient does not have to return to the office for another visit to confirm the presence of this pathogen. Your insurance will receive claims for the additional tests.
What is an O'Sullivan Test (Glucose Tolerance Test)?
During your pregnancy your physician will order this test to check for gestational diabetes. You are asked to drink a glucose beverage. One hour later, the lab tech will draw blood to test the level of glucose in your system. The test is timed so it is important to drink the beverage within 5 minutes from start to finish and then to have your blood drawn 1 hour later. You will be given a sheet of instructions which you should follow carefully for accurate results.
Do your physicians deliver at Presbyterian Matthews?
No, our physicians deliver at the Main Campus of Presbyterian Hospital.
Do I see the same OB doctor from start to delivery?

However, you will have at least one visit with each of the other 6 physicians to give you an opportunity to meet them as well. Our physicians all share call, so it is possible that one of the others physicians will be on call when you deliver.
